It’s crunch time at the French Open. The quarter finals are in a few hours and the excitement is rising. There’s always so much at stake at a grand slam event- the stage is bigger, the prize is greater, the players are better, the upsets are worse, the underdog is stronger, the crowd is crazier and viewers are always left feeling a little depressed after the show is over.
Although, apart from the four grand slam tournaments, tennis tournaments run almost all year round. It’s easy to catch ATP (the men’s tour) matches on Indian television but next to impossible to watch a women’s match live. Don’t get me wrong, I <3 men’s tennis, I do. But Indian sports television, among many other things, is dominated by men. Snooze. Also, what is that saying to all the young girls in the country? All the wrong things.
I was reminded of these WTA ads that came out last year. They combine some of the greatest tennis players, amazing inspiration, colour dust and glitter. What’s not to love?

A little harder
No pressure
Also in the series: Serena Williams and Ana Ivanovic
This ad should be every little girl’s anthem.

Unfortunately I’m sure there’s always been some bias toward showing more of men’s tennis but it doesn’t help that compared to the time of graf, seles, and more recently when the venus sisters where dominating, the quality of women’s tennis has been pretty poor for the past few years also with no great rivalries.
